Melbourne's summer is spiky rather than steady. A run of mild days is broken by three or four consecutive extreme days, and that pattern is exactly what empties a drink machine. Sites that stock for the average run out during the spike, so we weight Melbourne machines towards water and hydration ahead of forecast heat rather than after it.

This page covers what a free drink machine means for a Melbourne workplace specifically: local demand patterns, the precincts we service most, what the machine should hold in a VIC summer, who qualifies, and how long an install takes from here.

Free drink vending machine in Melbourne: a plain definition

A free drink vending machine in Melbourne is a refrigerated vending machine that we supply, deliver, install, stock, service and insure at no charge to the host business. Your site provides about half a square metre of floor space and a standard power point. We are paid from the margin on drinks sold through the machine, so there is no rental fee, no lease and no lock-in contract anywhere in the arrangement.

Drink vending demand across Melbourne

Melbourne summers average around 26°C on average, with clusters of 35–40°C days when a northerly sets in, and that is the number that drives chilled drink volume through our VIC machines. The Dandenong South and Truganina logistics estates run long shifts with limited nearby retail, so an on-site machine removes a genuine round trip rather than just a walk down the corridor.

The sites we place most in Melbourne are logistics parks, cold-chain and food processing, automotive and engineering workshops, corporate towers and university campuses. Geographically the strongest placements sit around Dandenong South, Truganina, Laverton North, Derrimut, Campbellfield, Braeside, Clayton, Port Melbourne, Footscray and the CBD — areas where staff numbers are high, shifts are long and the nearest shop is a drive rather than a walk.

Iced coffee performs unusually strongly in Melbourne sites, alongside the standard summer weighting to water and electrolytes. The product plan is set with your site before the first load and then adjusted from real sell-through, so a Melbourne warehouse and a Melbourne corporate floor end up with genuinely different machines rather than the same planogram twice.

Where we install in Melbourne

Our Melbourne install runs cover the full metropolitan area, including Dandenong South, Truganina, Laverton North, Derrimut, Campbellfield, Braeside, Clayton, Port Melbourne, Footscray and the CBD. Regional Victoria sites are serviced on grouped monthly runs, so terms are identical but lead times are longer.

Typical install time is 7–14 days across metropolitan Melbourne from the point we confirm your site qualifies. Before delivery we do a short site check to confirm the doorway width, the delivery path, the power point and the exact position — that check is what prevents a wasted truck visit, and it costs nothing.

Stocking a Melbourne machine for the summer ahead

Cold drink volume in Melbourne is strongly seasonal, and the shape of that season is local. With summer maximums around 26°C on average, with clusters of 35–40°C days when a northerly sets in, the practical planning question for a VIC site is not the average day but the worst week: the run of conditions that empties the water row by lunchtime and sends people to the nearest servo.

We handle that by widening the fast lines before the heat arrives rather than restocking after it. Each Melbourne machine reports its own stock levels and internal temperature over a mobile connection, so a hot week triggers an extra visit automatically. Ahead of every summer, installed Melbourne machines also get a refrigeration check — set points confirmed, condenser coils cleaned, door seals and airflow clearance inspected — because a machine that cools comfortably in September can struggle in February with a dusty coil.

Iced coffee performs unusually strongly in Melbourne sites, alongside the standard summer weighting to water and electrolytes. Sites with a wellbeing policy can weight the machine further towards water, sugar-free and low-sugar lines, or exclude categories entirely; the plan is yours to set and ours to keep full.

  • Water and electrolyte rows widened from November through March across VIC
  • Extra restock visits triggered by telemetry during hot weeks, not by a fixed calendar
  • Pre-summer refrigeration service on every installed machine
  • Planogram adjusted from real sell-through at your site, not a template

What it costs a Melbourne site

Nothing, other than the electricity the machine draws and the floor space it stands on. Everything else sits with us, including the drinks themselves.

Which sites qualify for a free drink machine

Eligibility comes down to foot traffic and access, not company size. As a rule of thumb, a Melbourne site needs enough daily traffic to move roughly a case of drinks a day across the week. A site with 25 or more people on the floor most days will almost always support a drink-only machine. Smaller sites can still qualify where traffic is concentrated — a 15-person workshop where everyone breaks at the same two times can outperform a 40-person office with staggered hours.

Access matters as much as headcount. The machine needs a ground-floor path or lift access, a doorway of at least 800 mm, a standard 10 amp power point within about two metres, and a floor that is level and out of direct rain. If your site has stairs, a tight loading dock or soft landscaping between the truck and the door, tell us in the enquiry — we install into difficult sites regularly and will bring the right equipment rather than turning up and failing.

  • 25+ people on site most weekdays is a comfortable qualifier
  • 15–25 people can qualify where breaks are concentrated or shifts run late
  • Ground floor or lift access, 800 mm doorway, standard power point
  • Undercover position, level floor, out of direct sun and rain

What happens from enquiry to first cold drink

The process is deliberately short, because most sites want the machine in before the hot weather rather than after it.

  • Step 1 — You send the enquiry with headcount, site type and location.
  • Step 2 — We confirm eligibility, usually within one business day.
  • Step 3 — A site check confirms the spot, the door width, the power point and the delivery path.
  • Step 4 — Delivery and install, including power-up, cooling down and payment terminal activation.
  • Step 5 — First stock load agreed with you, then telemetry-triggered restocks from there.

How to check this offer is genuine before you commit

A free machine sounds like it must have a catch, so it is reasonable to verify the offer before you sign anything. There is no lock-in contract, no rental line, no minimum spend and no exit fee. The program is funded entirely by product sales through the machine, which is why the placement has to make sense for both sides before we install.

Everything we claim is checkable. You can call the number on this page and speak to the person who will run your install. You can ask for the certificate of currency for our public liability cover before the machine arrives. You can ask for the names of comparable sites in your area and what their machine actually turns over. And you can end the arrangement and have the machine removed at no cost if it is not working for you.

  • No contract, no rental, no minimum spend, no exit fee
  • Certificate of currency for public liability provided on request
  • Machine removed free of charge if the site changes its mind
  • One named contact for your site, reachable by phone on 0401 662 678

Experience you can check

Who installs your machine in Australia, and exactly how it runs

Written and maintained by Dan Barnes — owner-operator, Free Vending Machines Australia

I have been placing and servicing vending equipment in Australian workplaces for over two decades — offices, warehouses, gyms, hospitals, schools, remote camps and government sites. Everything on this page reflects how we actually run installs across every state and territory: the machines we physically stock, the lead times our crews hold to, and the service standard we carry at our own cost. Nothing here is licensed boilerplate.

  • Typical Australian lead time: 7–14 days from a qualified request to a working machine.
  • $20 million public liability plus product liability — certificate of currency supplied to your facilities or WHS team on request.
  • Australian-owned, Australian-serviced. Same operator answers the phone on0401 NO COST.
  • Nayax cashless readers and live telemetry on every machine — not a retro-fitted coin mech.

What to expect, step by step

  1. 1. Two-question request

You tell us the workplace type and rough head count. No paperwork, no credit check, no sales visit required to get an answer.

  2. 2. Site check within 24 hours

We confirm head count, foot traffic, power location and access (lifts, stairs, loading dock, after-hours security) and pick the right machine.

  3. 3. Delivery and install

Our crew delivers, levels and commissions the machine, tests the cashless reader end-to-end and takes the packaging away. Nothing is invoiced.

  4. 4. Telemetry goes live

Every vend, temperature reading and fault code streams back to us. Low stock is flagged 2–3 days before a row empties.

  5. 5. Ongoing service, still $0

Restocks, cleaning, repairs, parts, product-mix changes and $20m public liability are all carried by us. Ask us to remove it and we do — no exit fee.

FAQ

Drink vending questions, answered

Are drink vending machines really free for Melbourne businesses?+

Yes. There is no machine cost, delivery fee, install fee, restocking charge, service fee or insurance premium billed to a Melbourne host site. The only cost you carry is the electricity — roughly two to four dollars a week — plus about half a square metre of floor space. We are paid from the margin on drinks sold.

How long does installation take in Melbourne?+

Typically 7–14 days across metropolitan Melbourne from the point we confirm eligibility, including a site check before the truck is booked. Regional Victoria installs run on grouped monthly schedules and take two to four weeks.

Which Melbourne areas do you cover?+

The whole metropolitan area, with the highest concentration of machines around Dandenong South, Truganina, Laverton North, Derrimut, Campbellfield, Braeside, Clayton, Port Melbourne, Footscray and the CBD. Regional Victoria is covered on monthly install runs.

How many staff does a Melbourne site need to qualify?+

About 25 people on site most weekdays comfortably supports a drink-only machine. Sites with 15 to 25 can qualify where breaks are concentrated, shifts run late, or the site is a long way from any shop.

What drinks sell best in Melbourne?+

Iced coffee performs unusually strongly in Melbourne sites, alongside the standard summer weighting to water and electrolytes. Across the whole VIC network, chilled water is the single largest category through summer, followed by electrolyte hydration and sugar-free soft drink.

Do the machines cope with Melbourne summer heat?+

Yes, when positioned correctly. Machines going into hot environments get clear airflow behind and beside the unit, a position out of direct sun, and a pre-summer refrigeration service. Internal temperature is monitored remotely so a drift is flagged before drinks go warm.

Is there a contract for a Melbourne placement?+

No lock-in contract and no minimum term. There is a short placement agreement covering access, power and care of the equipment. If it is not working for your site, we remove the machine at no cost.

Are the machines cashless?+

Yes — tap-and-go with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Coin and note mechanisms can be fitted where a Melbourne site specifically wants cash.

Can we get a drink machine and a snack machine?+

Yes. Sites above about 60 people usually do better with a separate drink machine and snack machine than with one combination unit, because neither category competes for shelf space at its peak.

Who do we deal with in Melbourne?+

One named contact who handles your site check, your install and your product plan, reachable directly on 0401 662 678. You will not be routed through a call centre.
